Internship in Product Design

Seth Leung
I am thrilled to share that I have completed my summer internship at Lidl and Kaufland Pte. Limited in Hong Kong! 🎉 Over the past two months, I have gained invaluable experience in the children's toy department, where I learned to communicate with suppliers, inspect samples, and propose ideas to buyers.
One of the highlights of my internship was working on a project where I designed an assortment of farm-themed plushies for the 2025 Easter line. This project allowed me to explore new Photoshop functions, enabling me to bring my creative visions to life. I also learned how to select appropriate materials for different parts of the plushies, ensuring both quality and safety.
I had the chance to use my language skills in Mandarin, Cantonese, and English, and I am truly thankful for this skill set, as it enhanced my ability to connect with both factories in China, and buyers from Europe.
Initially, I was quite clumsy and careless in my approach, but through this experience, I learned how to be professional and detail-oriented in my work. This internship truly changed my career trajectory; the satisfaction of working on diverse projects each day was far more enjoyable than focusing on just one task. It has deepened my interest in working for retailers and, most especially, in designing toys.
Additionally, the concept of benchmarking, which I learned in university, proved to be crucial in the professional design field, helping me understand industry standards and what aesthetic our target customer desire.
I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to my mentors, Krista Cheung and Luke Li. They have been super helpful, providing me with lots of feedback and teaching me how to effectively email suppliers and buyers. Their guidance on using new functions in Photoshop and giving me opportunities to collaborate with in-house designers has been invaluable.
This experience has ignited my passion for design and merchandising, and I’m eager to continue my career in this direction and apply what I've learned.
Looking forward to connecting with fellow professionals and exploring new opportunities!
